The structure of Yazd reservoirs

Water storage is one of the most important principles of life for residents of water-scarce areas. To solve this problem, the ancients had built buildings that were known as reservoirs. In fact, these buildings can be considered as an example of the art and initiative of ancient people. Places that were covered and often underground were built in such a way that they were filled with rainwater or streams in different seasons of the year. Reservoirs played a significant role in supplying water for the people of these areas.
In the past, reservoirs were divided into two types: public and private. The first type was usually built in neighborhoods and caravanserais as a single building and on the route of caravans, and the second type was built inside private houses according to the income of the owner of the house and his financial resources. They consisted of different parts, including a water storage source, a cover to camouflage the source, ventilator, staircase, splash and entrance decorated with the architecture of the artists of that era.
Due to the hot weather of the province, the reservoirs in Yazd have a number of windbreaks above them. Of course, most of these works had two windbreaks; But based on their area and size, some of these reservoirs were built with four, five and even six windbreaks. Among other features of these buildings, we can mention the dome-shaped roof, which was made with clay and mud. The dome-shaped roofs, the built-in windbreaks above them, the many stairs that were used to reach the place of water accumulation, and the type of decorations that were often in the form of brickwork, have left a clear example of Iranian architecture for the survivors. It is interesting to know that there are more than 60 reservoirs in Yazd province, most of which have been registered as historical monuments.

Gio Reservoir is one of several reservoirs built in Yazd, which belonged to the Qajar kings. According to historical documents, this reservoir was built at the beginning of the First World War in 1941, and its construction took about two years.
Apparently, Haj Mohammad Ebrahim Khorramshahi was responsible for the architecture of Giv Reservoir, and Arbab Jamshid Amanat also undertook the task of inspecting and supervising the construction. The improvement and restoration project of Rostam Giv Reservoir as one of the historical monuments of Yazd International City was implemented on July 23, 2018 AH by the initiative of the municipality of this international city.
This historical work was registered as one of Iran’s national works on January 4, 1997 with registration number 1829. Due to the drying up of the aqueducts, this reservoir also lacks water, and the water in the houses is supplied from the municipal tap water.

The cost of the construction of the historic building of the water reservoir was financed by Rostam Giv, who was the founder and founder of the Giv Charity Foundation, the head of the association and the representative of Zoroastrians in the National Assembly and the senator of the Senate and the representative of Zoroastrians in the National Assembly.

Rostam Giv Reservoir is placed on clay floors and its dome is designed in the shape of a turnip, which is decorated with a beautiful cedar design using bricks. Next to it, there are four long four-sided wind deflectors, whose bodies have also become more beautiful with brickwork decorations. This water reservoir has a large cylindrical tank that can hold about 2,300 cubic meters of water. The diameter of the opening of this cylinder reaches 14 meters and its depth reaches 15 meters.the valve, which were used for the entry of people in emergency situations.
The type of brick used in the construction of this building is known as Abarfarsh, known as water reservoir, and Saroj mortar is used for it. The brick design of this dome is in the shape of the Iranian symbol of cypress, which shows immortality.
One of the important and interesting points that can be observed about the construction of the Rostam Giv reservoir in Yazd is the installation of two openings for the use of Zoroastrians and Muslims separately, which are located in the neighborhoods of Zoroastrians and Muslims and at a distance of two kilometers from each other.
In a land where water is very important, neither a fellow Zoroastrian is satisfied with appropriating water for himself, nor a Muslim who appropriates the reservoir. In fact, the presence of water has connected people in many different neighborhoods of Iranian cities.
